Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
This is the most abused verse in the Bible. Jesus does not beg at the hearts of sinners. His appearance is very different from that of the effeminate men or is it hippie? shown in most illustrations accompanying this verse.
His appearance is described in Rev 1:12-18; 19:11-16.
Revelation 1:12 And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks;
13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
14 His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.
16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.
17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:
18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
Revelation 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
He opens the hearts of sinners by His great power (Acts 16:14; Rev 3:7).
Acts 16:14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.
Revelation 3:7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
Revelation 3:20 is for believing saints only! Consider the context! Context!
Revelation 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
All the letters of Revelation 2 and 3 are written to believers, some fallen from their first love, some giving heed to false doctrines, etc. and some faithful in each church. The rebukes are to the sinners, the commendations are to the faithful ones, whom the Lord exhorts to be overcomers of the evil that has crept into that particular church. Verse 20 is an opportunity given to the faithful ones to enter into a more intimate relationship with their Lord. Verse 21 is addressed to those who heed the invitation. Verse 19 is addressed to those who are vacillating between two influences.
Get this verse right today. Jesus is not a weak Savior begging for admission into a human heart who holds the power of decision for or against the Lord. He is the one who opens hearts, and (as with Pharaoh of Egypt) hardens hearts. Let never let anyone again deceive you with it into thinking that your salvation is dependent on you! If you are saved, you were chosen to be saved before the foundation of the world.
