Is Evangelism the Mission of Ekklesia?

If we take evangelism to mean giving the gospel message to someone who doesn’t yet believe, it is certainly part of the mission of Ekklesia.

When we “make disciples”, we are in fact converting a non-disciple into a disciple.

Since a disciple is at minimum one who believes the gospel and trusts Jesus, therefore, evangelism is part of our mission.

However, the mission extends beyond that.

It includes baptizing the new disciple as soon as possible.

It includes a longer term process of teaching the new disciple all the things that Jesus taught. This is specified in the Great Commission.

Matthew 28:19  Go ye therefore, and teach (make disciples of) all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20  Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Attention needs to be given to discipling after evangelism has taken place.

However, Evangelism is certainly a crucial first step.
