Ephesians 5:33  Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself;
and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Put in modern English, husbands are to love their wives, and wives to respect their husbands.

Why?

Though both husband and wife need to be loved by the other, it is the wife who specially feels the need for love.

Conversely, though both wife and husband need to be respected by the other, it is the husband who specially feels the need for respect.

The KJV word "reverence" is stronger than respect. It reflects the authority that the husband is given in the structure of the home. Wives are to reverence their husbands, and husbands have a need for their authority to be acknowledged and submitted to.

Does this mean that the husband can ride roughshod over his wife?

Of course not. If he did, he would not be loving his wife.

Does the husband have the authority to correct his wife where she strays from the Word of God?

Absolutely. He not only has the authority but the responsibility to do so. Authority always carries a counterpart of responsibility.

In this age of the false gospel of femininism, many wives want to cast off the restraint that comes from submission to authority.
