The Sabbath (Shabbat in Hebrew)
Read Genesis 1:3-2:3
God didn't rest because He was tired, but because He'd finished His work of creation.
Adam was created on the 6th day, prob late in the day. Shortly after he was created, Adam entered 7th day erev
Then came the night, with its train of stars, and its great gift of sleep
Then came the morning, Yom Shabbat, a day of rest for God and mankind.
God had created and finished His work, so we could enter His rest from the start.
Everything is finished, everything complete.
By their sin, Adam and Eve lost this rest.
God reminds us of this in Exodus 20:8-11.
God rained daily bread for His people in the desert
He rained twice as much on the 6th day
And none at all on the Shabbat.
His provision for the day of rest was completed before the Shabbat.
Now God calls us to enter His rest. Hebrews 4:1-11.
For unbelief, we don't enter Shabbat rest. Heb 3:19.
God made us to be free, not slaves.
He ordered a day off, and told His people Remember this.
God made the Shabbat a day of honor Isaiah 58:13-14
and He promised to lift us up if we honor it.
God gave us the Shabbat as a slice of Eternity in time - 52 slices of Eternity each year
We don't repair the world on the Shabbat.
Instead we trust God to perfect everything that concerns us.
A weekly opportunity for active faith.
God gave us the Shabbat as a type of the Millennium
4000 years from Adam to Yeshua
2000 years since
1000 years of Millennium, one day as 1000 years, 2 Pet 3:8
But the Lord said He might delay His return a bit. 2 Pet 3:9
Nonetheless, the signs of the times show that we are very near the end
Soon the glory of the Lord will cover earth and seas. Isaiah 11:9. Habakkuk 2:14
How Celebrate Shabbat
Pray and worship, read and meditate on God's Word
But observant Jews pray thrice a day!
So that does not distinguish Shabbat from work days.
Not work but Rest
Delight in the Shabbat
Psa 37:4 says "Delight in the Lord."
But how do we delight in the Lord?
The answer is in Isaiah 59:13-14
- We delight in the Lord by delghting in the Shabbat!
- And God promises to give us the desires of our heart!
